Frequently Asked Questions

What are the judges looking for? How will the winning designs be chosen?+

The winning designs will be judged based on their creativity and originality. We’ll also look at how well the designs meet the competition theme. We’ll choose one winning design from a child aged 5-11 and one winning design from a child aged 12-16.

The winning designs in each age group will be chosen by a panel of judges from M&S and YoungMinds, with an independent representative. We’ll shortlist designs in all four nations, which will then go to a national judging event where the two winning designs will be chosen.

One of the designs will feature on a yellow sweatshirt and the other design will feature on a yellow hoodie.

Why is there a template for a hoodie and sweatshirt? Does it matter which template my child chooses?+

The templates are available for your child to visualise their design on a hoodie or sweatshirt. Your child can use either template or simply using a plain sheet of A4 to drawn their design on.

We will be choosing two winning designs. One of the designs will feature on a yellow sweatshirt and one will feature on a yellow hoodie. M&S may change the product the design features on.

When will I find out if my child has won?+

Regional and national judging for the competition will take place during April and May 2025. We will be in touch with the named parent or guardian of both our winning young designers by 30 May.

We’re unable to get in touch with all entrants individually. If you haven’t heard from us by 30 May, please assume that your child’s design has not been successful.

What will the winner receive? What is the prize?+

Our two young designers will each win an exclusive prize! Not only will they see their design come to life on a sweatshirt or hoodie sold by M&S, but they‘ll also get behind-the-scenes access to watch their designs become reality.

The winners (along with their parent or guardian) will take part in an event in September where the products will be launched. They’ll also be invited to visit the M&S support centre in London to see their design transformed into artwork, or to tour the supplier factory in the Midlands to watch their designs being printed. Reasonable travel and expenses will be covered by M&S.

Each of our winners will receive enough yellow hoodies or sweatshirts featuring their winning design for all their class to wear on Hello Yellow Day (10 October 2025) too!

And the best part? 100% of profits from the sales of the winning hoodie and sweatshirt will go to YoungMinds, to ensure no young person feels alone with their mental health. So, your young person’s design will be making a difference.

Will young people be paid for their designs?+

No. There will be no payment made to the young people whose designs are chosen to feature on the hoodie/sweatshirt.

The two young designers (one aged 5-11 and one aged 12-16) will each win an exclusive prize. This will include hoodies/sweatshirts for all their class to wear, and the opportunity to see their design getting turned into artwork and printed in the supplier factory. Reasonable travel and expenses will be paid for the young people and their parent or guardian for these trips, but there will be no financial prize.

What are the rules for entry?+

Designs should be completed on either the hoodie template or the sweatshirt template or they can be completed on a plain sheet of A4 paper. The design must have been created by a young person aged 5 to 16. The design should include the age of the young person, to ensure it gets judged in the right category (either the 5-11 category or the 12-16 category).

Please don't include the child's name anywhere on their hoodie/sweatshirt design. We want to ensure that all entries are judged anonymously.

Please see the full T&Cs for all the rules.

When is the entry deadline?+

Entries must be submitted by 11.59pm on Monday 31st March 2025 by visiting the M&S website [link]. We’re sorry that any designs submitted after this date won’t be included in the judging process. The competition is for young people aged 5-11 and 12-16 but the designs must be submitted by an adult aged 18+.

How do I submit my entry?+

Once the young person has completed their hoodie or sweatshirt design, take a picture of their design on your phone.

Make sure that the design includes the age of the young person but please don’t include the child’s name anywhere on their hoodie/sweatshirt design. We want to ensure that all entries are judged anonymously.

Then click on “Enter the competition” to upload the picture of their design . You will be asked to provide your name and contact details so we can get in touch with you to let you know if your young person has won. Please see the privacy policy to understand how your personal information will be handled.

How will M&S manage my personal information? +

M&S will use the personal information of the responsible parent or guardian and the young person to administer the competition. M&S will also share the responsible parent’s/guardian’s name and email with YoungMinds so they can ensure they don’t email their supporters who have already entered the competition. For more information about how M&S handles personal information, including details of your rights, please see our privacy policy.

Will my child be required to take part in social media or PR/media activity, if they win?+

Yes. M&S will be promoting the hoodies and sweatshirts featuring the winning designs on their social media channels (including LinkedIn and Instagram) and through national/regional PR and media activity. This might include adverts featuring the products online or in selected newspapers. The products will also be promoted to M&S customers in store, online, and through email communications.

The communication may feature images and/or videos of the winners. Please ensure that you are happy for your child to take part in these activities, before submitting their design. By agreeing to the T&Cs, you are agreeing for your child to be part of public promotion.

Can children enter a group design e.g. with their siblings?+

No. We are looking for individual designs from young people.
